Her performance as Veda Pierce in the 1945 film Mildred Pierce was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Happy Birthday: Greta Garbo. 18 September 1905 – 15 April 1990). Garbo launched her career with a secondary role in the Swedish film The Saga of Gosta Berling (1924). Her performance caught the attention of Louis B. Mayer, who brought her to Hollywood in 1925 to work at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). She immediately stirred interest with her first silent film, Torrent (1926); a year later, her performance in Flesh and the Devil, her third movie, made her an international superstar. On TCM Sept.18th: Latin Lovers(1953). Nora Taylor, is rich and thinks every man she meets is after her money, and that includes her fiancĂ©, Paul Chevron, who is also rich. Paul goes to Brazil to play some polo, and Nora follows not far behind. There, she meets and falls for Roberto Santos, who she thinks has no money. Click picture on side bar to read review.

Happy Birthday: Sophia Loren (20 September 1934). In 1962, Loren won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Two Women, along with 21 awards, becoming the first actress to win an Academy Award for a non-English-speaking performance. Loren has won 50 international awards, including two Oscars, seven Golden Globe Awards, a Grammy Award, a BAFTA Award and a Laurel Award. Her other films include: Houseboat (1958), El Cid (1961), Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (1963), Marriage Italian-Style (1964). Please click picture on side bar to view birthday tribute.

On TCM Sept: 22nd: Between Two Worlds(1944). Several people are killed in a London air raid. They each awake aboard a strange ship which will deliver each of them either to heaven or hell. Their lives and stories are revealed as they individually begin to realize where they are.

Happy Birthday: Mickey Rooney(September 23, 1920) He has won multiple awards, including an Honorary Academy Award, a Golden Globe and an Emmy Award. Working as a performer since he was a small child, he was a superstar as a teenager for the films in which he played Andy Hardy, and he has had one of the longest careers of any actor, to date spanning almost 90 years. He is the last surviving male star from 1930s Hollywood. For a younger generation of fans, he gained international fame for his leading role as Henry Dailey in The Family Channel's The Adventures of the Black Stallion. On TCM Sept. 23rd: Too Hot to Handle is a 1938 film about a newsreel reporter, the aviatrix he is attracted to, and his fierce competitor. Cast: Clark Gable, Myrna Loy and Walter Pidgeon. The comic highlight of the film is an early scene in which Gable is shown filming a faked newsreel of an aerial attack. Many of the gags were put together by an uncredited Buster Keaton.
